While glyphosate-based herbicides on not used specifically in potatoes, they have been an important tool for crop producers in the battle against weeds. However, in March of 2015 the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans.” Since then, numerous lawsuits have sought to demonstrate that glyphosate use causes cancer. This presentation will show the scientific evidence on the toxicity of glyphosate, discuss the difference between risk and hazard, and share the results of the long-term Agricultural Health Study. The benefits of using glyphosate in agricultural systems are often underestimated and this presentation will show ways that glyphosate use truly is a terrific tool with respect to reduced herbicide use and reduced tillage.
